报告摘要:

As a green technology, light has played a crucial role in the age of information technologies. The ever-increasing demand for high-capacity optical applications has propelled the use of physical dimensions of light including intensity, wavelength, polarization and mode for information multiplexing (a process in which parallel light channels are optically addressed in a shared medium to obtain an increased capacity). The angular momentum (AM) of light includes spin angular momentum possessed by circularly polarized light and orbital angular momentum exhibited by the twisted wavefront of light. AM has thus emerged as a new multiplexing method for high capacity communications ranging from free-space to compact optical fiber. The realization of on-chip AM multiplexing, however, remains a fundamental challenge because there is no natural material that can be used to sense twisted light. This talk will briefly review the state-of-the-art of the nanophotonic manipulation of AM, especially will focus on the approaches of chip-scale generation and detection of AM of light. I will also introduce our recent work in the design of an integrated nanophotonic chip with which we can achieve noninterference AM sensitivity, with the use of mode-sorting nanoring slits. In addition, I will discuss the potentials of our miniature and ultrawide bandwidth chip for wide-ranging applications.
