The Institute of Photonics Technology (IPT) @ Jinan University specializes in research into advanced optical techniques for information systems. This involves fundamental research and development in the fields of advanced photonic devices, fiber sensor techniques, high speed optical communications and microwave photonics. The IPT has two complementary missions. The first is to solve critical problems in the relative fields through revolutionary approaches that enable revolutionary advances in performance. The second is to commercialize the techniques into products by collaborating with industry.
Currently the IPT faculty has 16 academic and research staff, including 5 professors, 4 associate professors, and 6 lecturers. The whole team is active in the academic frontier, and the research of IPT is internationally renowned and has been highlighted by Nature Photonics and Laser Focus World. The IPT has been successful in winning major research funding from nationally competitive research grant sources, from the Defense Science and Technology Organization, and from industry.
The IPT has outstanding research resources and facilities, including Fiber Optics laboratories, Optical Fiber Sensor Laboratories, Optical Communication & Signal Processing Laboratories, Microwave Photonics Laboratories, Biophotonics Laboratories, Engineering & Applied Research Laboratories, and Sensitive Materials & Polymer Photonics Laboratories. Meanwhile the IPT has worldwide collaborations and has established JNU-POLYU Joint Research Laboratory for Fiber Optics with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
