报告摘要:

Optical metasurfaces have catalysed transformative advances across imaging, optoelectronics, quantum information processing, sensing, energy conversion, and optical computing. As the field moves from proof-of-concept demonstrations toward practical applications, one critical challenge becomes apparent: how to integrate multiple optical functions into a single compact device. I will show that disorder can be strategically harnessed to enhance the functional density of metasurfaces, addressing the longstanding challenge of efficient area utilisation [1]. Through a synthetic design strategy, we introduce randomised distributions of functionally distinct unit cells— termed meta-pixels—which exhibit optically selective responses across multiple degrees of freedom, implemented via either local- or nonlocal-type phase pixels. Embedded within the metasurface aperture, these meta-pixels are encoded with distinct phase wavefronts that can be selectively accessed via wavelength, polarisation, and orbital angular momentum.

Dr Haoran Ren is an ARC Future Fellow (a former DECRA Fellow) at the School of Physics and Astronomy at Monash University. He leads the Structured Nanophotonics Group. His research in nanophotonics explores the full potential and multi-dimensional nature of light, focusing on controlled light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. He serves as an Associate Investigator for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS), Secretary (2025) of the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society, Chair (2024-2026) of the OPTICA Photonic Metamaterials Technical Group. He was awarded 2024 Faculty of Science Award for Excellence in Research by an ECR (Monash University), 2024 SPIE 3D Printing, Fabrication, and Manufacturing Award, the Candidate Award for the 2023 Rising Stars of Light, the 2022 ANZOS Geoff Opat Early Career Researcher Prize, the 2017 Victoria Fellowship, and the 2016 Outstanding Self-financed Chinese Students Abroad.
