题    目:Strategies for High Performance Surface Plasmon Resonance Photonic Biosensors

Over the past decade, biophotonics has been a fast-growing topic because of raising demand from the healthcare industry and natural migration of a variety of enabling technologies developed for the fibre communication market. Among the many domains within biophotonics, low-cost diagnostics devices have been regarded as an important topic. At present, most of such devices are based on fluorescence or spectral effects coming from a change of state in the bio-detection process. These so-called “end-point” techniques offer good sensitivity for positive/negative test outcomes, but no information for quantification, nor any real-time data. Such a situation hence has led to much research effort in “label-free” detection techniques, in which the target molecules are detected in their raw state(s), typically via measuring a change of refractive index. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), an effect associated with oscillation of electron density in a metal surface upon receiving excitation from an incident optical wave, is an effective approach for detecting small changes of refractive index caused by the immobilization of target molecules. Our team has been working of the detection of optical phase change associated with SPR. It has been demonstrated that a sensitivity limit of ~5×10-8 refractive index unit (RIU) is readily achievable. The aim of this presentation is to share our experience on the development of various strategies for achieving high resolution in SPR biosensors. The merits of different signal capture schemes will be discussed. Several ideas for improving SPR phase detection resolution, including interferometer design and phase modulation schemes such as photoelastic modulation, liquid crystal retardation dithering and white-light spectral-phase techniques will be addressed. We also discuss issues related the possibility of achieving high-density SPR biosensor arrays (i.e. “bio-chip”). An update on current status of SPR biosensing will also be presented.

报告人简介: 
Professor Ho-pui (Aaron) Ho received his BEng and PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 1986 and 1990 respectively. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has held positions as Associate Dean of Engineering, CUHK, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, City University of Hong Kong, and Senior Process Engineer for semiconductor laser fabrication in Hewlett-Packard. Started as a compound semiconductor materials scientist, his academic interests have evolved over the years to cover a broad range of topics including nano-sized semiconductor materials for photonic and sensor applications, optical instrumentation, surface plasmon resonance biosensors and biophotonics. He has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles and 5 US patents.
